A doctor from South Africa, and his bride Ukrainian woman was arrested in the UAE for extramarital sex
In the United Arab Emirates is gaining strength, another scandal of foreigners arrested for extramarital sex. A citizen of South Africa, and his bride Ukrainian was detained in Abu Dhabi after it was found out that the girl is pregnant. Relatives Africans claim they have not received any help from diplomats. The trial continues for more than a month.
Amylin Culverwell who worked in the UAE for the past five years, and Irina Nogay became engaged on January 27. Two days later the young man brought his girlfriend to the hospital – her stomach hurt. The doctor found that the foreigner is pregnant, and immediately reported it to the authorities, writes News 24.
The groom’s mother, Linda Culverwell, told reporters that her family failed to get any answers from the authorities in Abu Dhabi, UAE Embassy in South Africa or the South African Consulate in the UAE.
“Every time we try to get information, we feel like you hit a brick wall. We don’t even know if they have legal protection,” says Linda.
According to her, the Ukrainian Embassy is trying to help a couple obtain a marriage license. The employer Emilina Culverwell says formal charges are not yet filed in love, as Irina, apparently, is “undergoing further testing”, which should show how long she was sexually active.
Family Culverwell concerned for the health of their future daughter-in-law, since abdominal pain in the early stages of pregnancy can be signs of a threatened miscarriage. “I can imagine the hell that she is going through. As if she had been raped by the authorities,” says Linda Culverwell.
The woman insists that her son, a fan of the gym, never smoked or drank alcohol. “The only thing they did wrong was love,” she says.
South African diplomats, to which reporters asked for comment, said that the couple prosecuted according to the laws of the UAE and the South African government cannot intervene in the situation. According to them, all that remains to do is to ensure that the trial was conducted legally.
Lawyer Michael Bagraim in the comments to News24 said that no South African lawyer will not be able to effectively protect the arrested foreigners and family Culverwell should contact the law firm of UAE. He believes that to affect the trial you can only use international human rights organizations and pressure from the international community.
We will remind, it not the first case when foreigners are prosecuted for extramarital sex. So, last year, a British citizen received a prison sentence after he appealed to the police with a statement about gang rape. Local authorities felt that a rape charge is false, and punish a girl for immoral behavior and sexual promiscuity. Three years earlier a Norwegian tourist got to UAE the term more than her rapist.
