Died world-known Ukrainian scientist, astronomer
and comet researcher, corresponding member of National Academy of Sciences
Ukraine’s Klim Churyumov, said channel NewsOne , citing
Deputy Director of the Kiev planetarium Elena Dirdovsky.

According to her, 79-year-old astronomer died suddenly when I was on the way
on the way to Kharkiv.

Klim Churyumov became world famous thanks to the discovery of the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 1969, and of the comet Churyumov-Solodovnikov. The most famous was the first of her studies was involved in the Rosetta spacecraft collided with the comet’s surface on September 30.

Churyumov was the Director of the Kiev planetarium and President
Ukrainian society of Amateur astronomers.

In September 1969, Churyumov along with graduate student Svetlana
Gerasimenko during observations of comet comas Sola made a photo
which turned out to be another unknown comet, named their
discoverers – “Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko”. Later, in 1986,
Churyumov opened a second comet called “Comet
Churyumov-Solodovnikov”.

2 March 2004 from Kourou was launched into space
European interplanetary probe Rosetta. The main objective of the probe was
the study of comets Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Automatic station
it took over 10 years to fly to the object under investigation, reminds TASS. For
this time the probe has overcome in the space of more than 6.4 billion km away.
