The EU will not change its position on Russia, even if it will make the United States. This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy Federica Mogherini after an informal dinner with foreign Ministers of countries – EU members on the outcome of U.S. presidential elections, reports RIA “Novosti”.

“As for Russia, you know, the EU has taken a very principled position on illegal annexation of Crimea and the situation in Ukraine. This will not change, despite policy changes”, – said Mogherini reporters, answering the question of how possible changes in relations between the US and Russia after the victory of Donald trump in the presidential election will affect the position of the EU.

As noted Mogherini, the EU “talks with Russia and working with Russia on many issues, including the Iranian (nuclear) agreement for the middle East peace process, Libya, on counter-terrorism”.

According to the head of EU diplomacy, to some extent, and on the Syrian issue parties work together in the framework of the international support group Syria, despite the fact that the position of Brussels on some issues is very different from that pursued by Moscow.

Mogherini urged “not to put relations with Russia in black and white.” “On the one hand, there is dialogue and interaction, we call this constructive and selective cooperation on some issues. On the other hand, there is a strong, principled position, especially on Ukraine and other conflicts to the East (from the EU). And our attention to our Eastern partners will continue,” she said.

Federica Mogherini also said that the meeting of foreign Ministers of the EU was declared the readiness to begin work with the administration that will appoint the elected President of the United States Donald trump is still in the transition period, continuing active cooperation with the current. As noted by the head of EU diplomacy, for this she is ready to visit Washington in the near future and invite trump appointed Secretary of state at a meeting of the foreign Affairs Council of the EU, reports “Interfax”.

In turn, the Belgian foreign Minister Didier Reynders, speaking at a press conference, rejected the assumption of journalists that the Ministers held a meeting “in a state of panic” in connection with the outcome of American elections.
