Russia is for the EU an equal partner, not a “regional power,” as it was described by the President of the USA Barack Obama. In an interview with Euronews , said the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

“I would like to hold discussions with Russia on equal terms. Russia is not “a regional power”, as President (Barack) Obama. It was a big mistake in judgment,” said Juncker.

He stressed that he would like to have the EU and Russia had a relationship outside the usual boundaries, because in Europe it is impossible to build a security structure without the participation of Moscow. The Chairman of the EC stressed that Russia should be treated as a “major education and proud nation”. According to Juncker, the EU is still much to learn about “depth” of Russia, since the Union remains poorly informed on this matter, reports RIA “Novosti”.

However, Juncker stressed that he had not yet seen “any arguments in favor of the immediate lifting of sanctions against Russia.” Answering the question of whether or not the impact on policy of sanctions coming to power in the US, Donald trump, head of the European Commission underscored the independence of EU foreign policy from the position of the States.

On 18 November in the framework of the last European tour, the outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama agreed with the leaders of the EU to extend sanctions against Russia, imposed because of the aggravation of the situation in the East of Ukraine. In the West this is attributed to the intervention of Russia and support for separatist regimes in the Kremlin and the foreign Ministry categorically reject.
