The new President of the International football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino plans to expand the number of participants of the world Cup to 48 teams. This was the successor to Joseph Blatter said the TV channel ESPN.

“Our role is in the development of football, and that’s why I proposed to expand the number of participants of the world Cup to 40 teams at the tournament in Qatar in 2022 – quoted Infantino TASS. But in the tournament can play and 48 teams”.

It is expected that the final decision on this issue will be made in January 2017. In the finals of the 2018 world Cup, which will be held in Russia, will take part 32 teams.

According to the plan Infantino, the new format of the world Cup should look like this: 16 best national teams are selected from at the group stage and 32 teams prior to the tournament will spend in the host country of the FIFA world Cup round of the playoffs, where their number will be reduced to 16.
