Gorbachev, 25 years after the collapse of the USSR, acknowledged partial responsibility for the collapse of the Union, but his conscience is clear
Ex-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, 25 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union stated that it does not remove from itself responsibility for what happened.
The politician believes that in the conditions of perestroika and glasnost, the Federal Republic began to demand real content granted them sovereignty. But to reform or to renew the Soviet Union was, according to him, necessary and possible, writes Gorbachev in his article on the website “Russian newspaper”.
“Late, but we went on this way. If all the participants in this process, showed responsibility, then I am sure he would give the result: we would have a strong, indeed a sovereign Republic and a strong, effective centre, acting in their common interests. But to solve this problem we are unable. I do not disclaim its share of responsibility. But my conscience is clear,” writes Gorbachev.
He added, “defended the Union until the end, acting politically”.
“But if all behave responsibly? No. I can not say about the role of the then Russian leadership. Since the adoption of the Declaration on state sovereignty of the RSFSR in 1990, and until the decision of the Supreme Council to approve the Belovezhskoe agreement in December 1991, it was in General a destructive position. If not the position of Russia, the separatists of the other republics never had the strength to destroy the Union,” said the ex-President of the USSR.
He added that and now I am convinced that even after the August putsch, in which the Republic adopted the Declaration of sovereignty and independence, could agree with most of them about the creation of a Union Confederation. The negotiations were difficult, but a draft agreement was prepared, recalled Gorbachev.
“Those who with “ease of mind” burying the Union did not imagine the consequences of their actions. In Russia, many thought that hastily invented the Commonwealth of Independent States will be something of a “Union without Gorbachev.” Moreover, to rule, to dominate the post-Soviet space is Russia, and rest of the country would agree with that. The other illusion was that Russia will have in the world no less weight than the Union. But it was objectively impossible. In addition, the country was weakened as a result of the failure of the “radical” reforms. It was bad for Russia and bad for the world,” said the first and only President of the USSR.
“From the world order was pulled the rod. Was the lost opportunity of equal cooperation. The Western world, especially the United States, captured the euphoria of “victory in the cold war”. But it was an illusion. To build a world dominated by one country or group of countries, failed. Now it is clear to everyone”, – said Gorbachev.
