President of the International chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has offered to temporarily suspend his powers until the next presidential Council, said the Director of FIDE representative office in the Russian Federation Berik balgabayev.
The meeting of the presidential Council of FIDE held Sunday in Athens.
“The FIDE President proposes to temporarily suspend his powers until the next presidential Council,” wrote the balgabayev in Twitter.
At the end of November it became known that the Ministry of Finance of the USA Ilyumzhinov has included in its sanctions list on Syria.
The head of the FIDE, according to the Ministry of Finance, was included in the list, in particular, “for the financial support and action for and on behalf of the Syrian government and the Central Bank of Syria”. The Ilyumzhinov claims to not recognize.
Ilyumzhinov was elected FIDE President on 24 November 1995. Ever since he was six times re-elected to this position. For more than 90-year history of the Federation, it is the sixth President.
