“According to my American lawyers, there are three versions of events: the first – I was not allowed in the US, the second I am arrested and the third is I go through border control. I’m ready for any of these options, but I am sure that good sense will prevail, and my personal presence in the US will help to sort out the misunderstanding”, – he said earlier (quoted by “Interfax”).
Ilyumzhinov was elected FIDE President on 24 November 1995. Since he was six times re-elected to this position. At the end of November 2015, the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions against him, accusing him of having links with the head of the Syrian Central Bank.
