The President of Abkhazia Raul Khajimba signed a law banning abortion in the Republic. As reported “Interfax” in the administration of the President, the document was signed in the same form in which it was passed by the Parliament. The law came into force on 9 February.
Prohibiting abortion bill “On state protection of life
the mother and the unborn child”, by amending the Constitution
of the Republic, deputies of Parliament of Abkhazia adopted in the final reading
December 18, 2015. 29 January 2016 the Parliament of Abkhazia passed the law
“On health care” amendment to ban abortion.
In addition, in the Republic are organized crisis pregnancy centers, reports Russian service of the BBC. “Crisis pregnancy center is an organization dedicated to providing helpful advice and educational assistance in cases of unplanned pregnancy and/or depression associated with a desire to make abortion” – said in the textof the law.
One of the deputies who initiated the adoption of an amendment banning abortion, said
The kharazia, told reporters that “abortion is an artificial reduction
the number of the already small population of Abkhazia”. He said that
only since 1993 in Abkhazia was made 11,9 thousand abortions. At the same time, members of the public, including from the medical community spoke out against the ban of abortion.
Chief obstetrician-gynecologist of Abkhazia Rita Traps, commenting on
a law passed by Parliament, has previously noted that, despite clear progress in medicine, there are diseases associated with pregnancy. According to Trapx, 2015 in Abkhazia was made about 700 abortions, among them for medical reasons about 15. The majority of abortions, according to the doctor, women do because of social problems.
