The earthquake of a magnitude of 6.4 occurred on Friday in Chile, reports TASS with reference to the Geological service of the USA. The epicenter was 25 km from the city of Iquique, at a depth of at 90.8 km.

Initially, European-Mediterranean seismological centre has identified as a 6.1 magnitude, but then the assessment was revised upwards.

There is no tsunami threat, announced the naval forces of Chile, monitor adjacent to the coast of the Pacific ocean. According to them, the hearth tremors lies at a depth of 148 kilometers.

According to the Agency AFP, the tremors were felt in the capital Santiago, the epicentre about 150 km, and caused panic among the population.

Tremors of this magnitude often in the past led to severe damage to buildings, but so far the Chilean national seismological center said that the earthquake did not cause significant damage.
