The Federal office for radiation protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, BfS) presented the report on the results of the search for the source of the recent rise in the level of radioactivity of the air in Europe. From the text it follows that to establish the exact cause of this phenomenon experts have not succeeded, however, in their opinion, most likely, the source is located in the southern Urals, reports the website of the Ministry.

“From September 29 to several measurement stations in Europe recorded in the air a slight increase of indicators of radioactivity. For example, six stations in Germany, as well as several stations in Austria and Italy discovered in air samples some amount of radioactive substances ruthenium-106 (Ru-106)”, – is told in the message of BfS.

It also notes that the concentration of detected radioactive substances is extremely small and poses no threat to life and health of the population.

Le Figaro publishes the most plausible hypotheses about the reasons for the leak

The reason for the appearance of radioactive substances in the air is still not clear. However, according to BfS, with high probability the source is in the southern Urals. This is indicated by recent analyses, explained in the Department. While they point out that “we cannot exclude other regions in the South of Russia”.

Version of the accident on NPP as the reason for increasing the content of ruthenium-106 in samples of experts have rejected because, in addition to ruthenium-106, no other radiological isotopes was not detected.

In the message BfS said that ruthenium-106 is used as a radiation source in cancer therapy. Rarely ruthenium-106 is used in radioisotope thermoelectric generators, which are used in power supply satellites. A substance can also occur in the processing of nuclear fuel elements.

In Russia everything is calm: the increase in radiation level no leaks too

Insights BfS already commented on the authorities of the Chelyabinsk region. Located on the territory of the region the city of lakes is, in particular, one of the enterprises of “Rosatom”. However, officials deny the possibility of leakage.

According to them, a substance such as ruthenium-106, to be formed in local enterprises, even after recycling, can. In addition, the Ministry of public security jointly with Rosatom regularly checks the level of background radiation in the area, and no exceedances during the inspections were recorded, reported RIA “news” the Minister of public security of the region Yevgeny Savchenko.

But even if we assume that this substance comes from here, spread to such a vast territory it would have noticed in the Ministry of environment of the region.

BfS data is also commented on in the Kaliningrad region, surrounded by EU countries, in the air over which it was recorded increased radioactivity. It noted that the excess of background radiation on the territory of the Russian enclave was not.

In the winter of this year in a number of EU countries had detected radioactive iodine-131. In search of the causes of this unexplained phenomena by the Western press accused the EU authorities in an attempt to hide information from the public suspected that the incident may have involved Russia.
