Archaeologists found in the center of Moscow is potentially the most ancient street in the capital. Scientists from the Institute of archaeology RAS argue that the site of the demolished hotel “Russia” found a Great street that could appear on the territory of Moscow in the XII century, reports RIA “Novosti”.
“The Great street took place in the area Mokrinskogo alley, she led from the Kremlin to the Marina and is one of the oldest construction phase of the city in XII-XIII centuries,” – said in a press release RAS.
The researchers found the logs, which bridge was laid during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich and Peter the Great. Part of the stones of the pavement, according to archaeologists, the scientists also managed to find and underneath it all were found still more ancient logs terrain that carpeted the street in previous historical epochs.
In addition to the traces of the streets, Russian archeologists were able to find many shards of pottery from the times of Ivan the terrible and later rulers, elements, architectural structures and other artifacts. As the researchers highlighted that they have just started digging and have not yet touched upon the most ancient layers of the street. “The continued excavation will undoubtedly shed new light on the history of the most ancient streets of Moscow Posad, Moscow and the whole Russian state,” – said the archaeologist.
Finding will not affect the timing of the project for the construction of Zaryadye Park, said the chief archaeologist of Moscow Leonid Kondrashev. According to him, the excavations were in the plans originally, so will not retard the timing.
In a press-service of the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation believe that the ancient street was found necessary to include in the Park “Zaryadye”. The question of the status of this ancient street must address the Moscow government and the archaeologists. “But first, scientists need to conduct more detailed study,” – commented the press service of the Ministry.
According to archaeologists, every metre of the Zaryadye Park, where excavations were carried out, accounts for about 10 valuable historical finds. Only, by July 2015, the Park was found about 900 such items.
Hotel “Russia” was built here in the mid 60-ies of the last century. In 2004, the Moscow city government decided to demolish this building and build in its place a more modern complex, combining the functions of hotels and office buildings. Dismantling of the hotel was completed in may of this year.
