In Pakistan are preparing to appeal in the case of Christian woman Asia Bibi, sentenced to death for insulting the prophet Muhammad
Supreme court of Pakistan is preparing to study the appeal case of a Christian woman
Asiya Bibi, who was sentenced in 2010 to death by hanging in connection with the accusation of insulting the prophet Muhammad, reports “Interfax”.
As previously wrote the British tabloid
The Daily Mail, a court hearing is scheduled for October 13. If the verdict against Bibi to be executed, she will become the first man to be executed in Pakistan for blasphemy. Since the early 1990’s, around 200 Christians were convicted in Pakistan for desecrating the Koran or for blasphemy, however, no such business has not ended with the death penalty.
If the Supreme court of Pakistan rejects the appeal, the convicted will be able to appeal directly to the President asking for clemency. In 2010, the court approved the death sentence of the mother of five children, Asia Bibi. In 2014, the condemned, which has long been in custody, approved the sentence, but its execution was postponed to next year.
The incident involving Bibi occurred in 2009. She and other women worked in the fields. She was asked to fetch water. However, working with Bibi Muslim women refused to drink saying that the water brought by the Christian and therefore “unclean”. Asiya began to protest, but this caused among women, only more excited.
The entire incident was forgotten, but after a while frightened Bibi went to the police, saying that she was chased by a crowd of Muslims. For her own safety the woman was taken to the police station.
A spokesman for the Pakistani Ministry of minorities Affairs Kamran Shahzad, telling the court about future events, said that after some time at the police station, where he was hiding Bibi, a crowd of Muslims, including members of the clergy, who demanded to give them to violence Asia because she spoke badly about the prophet Muhammad.
As said the Ministerial official, the police, therefore, first of all have saved the woman’s life, but then recorded the fact of blasphemy. From this point on Asia Bibi more than a year held in detention and only on Monday was sentenced to death.
The story of Bibi resonated around the world. In October 2014, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill after Pope Francis addressed to the President of Pakistan Mamnun Hussein with a request to pardon Asia Bibi.
“The execution of Asia Bibi would not only be an irreplaceable loss for her family, relatives and friends, but will cause huge damage to Muslim-Christian dialogue can become the impetus for increasing tensions between Christians and Muslims in Pakistan and around the world”, – was stated in the Patriarchal message.
Human rights activists also condemned the incident with Bibi. The representative of Human Rights Watch’s Ali Dayan Hasan said that the blasphemy law is in contradiction with the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan and therefore should be cancelled.
