In Paris, an exhibition of paintings from the collection of Sergei Shchukin: waiting for a record million visitors
In Paris on the eve of the opening of the exhibition “Masterpieces of new art. Collection Shchukin”. The exhibition presents 158 paintings, including 22 canvases of Henri Matisse, 29 works of Pablo Picasso, 12 masterpieces by Paul Gauguin, eight of Paul cézanne and Claude Monet, reports RIA “Novosti”.
The main part of the exhibits was provided by the Hermitage and the Pushkin Museum. Pushkin 62 and 64, and another 15 paintings came from the Tretyakov gallery. The exhibition is complemented with paintings, brought from Rostov-on-don, Saratov and Kirov region, but also from the Netherlands, Greece, France, Monaco and the United States. To place all the exhibits, the Museum Louis Vuitton Foundation, it took four floors.
Among the paintings that can be seen at the exhibition “Breakfast on the grass” by Claude Monet (Museum), “Harmony in red (the Red room)” by Henri Matisse (the Hermitage), “And, are you jealous?” Paul Gauguin (Pushkin Museum), “Fight a tiger with bull” Henri Rousseau (Hermitage).
The exhibition will last for four months – until February 20, and guests of the Foundation also will feature concerts and dance performances. In addition, they will be able to participate in the international Symposium.
The organizers expect that the event will cause an increased interest of the public. The exhibition is expected to record one million visitors, TASS was told by the owner of LVMH Moet Hennessy – Louis Vuitton (LVMH) and Christian Dior, Bernard Arnault.
127 works, presented in Paris, formerly belonged to the famous Russian patron Sergei Shchukin, who began to collect paintings in 1882. After the revolution, his collection was nationalized, and in 1928 it was merged with the collection of Ivan Morozov to create a new Museum and the real Museum (the State Museum of new Western art).
In 1948, after being accused of formalism and anti-people picking up the art Museum was closed by the personal decree of Joseph Stalin. The most valuable works of the real Museum, including the paintings of Henri Matisse, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso, were distributed between the Hermitage and the Pushkin Museum. Opened in Paris, the exhibition was highly praised by the representative of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Jean-Paul Clavery, who called the collection “a national treasure of Russia” “one of the most beautiful contemporary art collections in the world.”
In turn, the grandson of Sergei Shchukin Andre-Marc Delok-Furko admitted that he wanted to see the unification of the collection of his grandfather. The exhibition is so unique, the grandson of Shchukin believes that “four months later, her work in Paris, the world is divided into two parts – those who were able to attend the rest of us”.
At the opening ceremony on Thursday was attended by the Minister of culture of Russia Vladimir Medinsky. “We are especially proud of the history of cultural exchange between Russia and France. It is the collection of Shchukin and Morozov shows what’s unique cultural ties between our countries. Already, critics have called this exhibition the largest cultural event in Europe this year,” he said. Medina noted that it is also a great political event that “shows how friendship between people, understanding, respect to each other are able to create masterpieces for centuries”.
The Minister also said that the collection is insured for 3.5 billion euros. However, he noted, this large amount will not reflect the real value of works of art.
