Thai police arrested on Pattaya two Russian citizens, suspected of illegal use and smuggling of electronic cigarettes. Now, the man and his bride are threatened by punishment in the form of long terms of imprisonment.
Two young men came to Southeast Asia from Tula. They were stopped by the traffic police of Pattaya while walking around the city on 17 September, reports TASS with reference to the Deputy honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in the provinces of Chonburi and Rayong Fedora Ozarenov.
“Police noticed the girl in the hands of the electronic cigarette and performed a personal inspection. The things the young man was also found another similar apparatus”, – said the diplomat Ozarenov.
According to him, a couple of Russia held in a police precinct more than a day, and then was released on bail in the amount of 100 thousand baht (three thousand dollars). “Electronic cigarette sent for examination in this regard, the court is expected within the next month” – said the Deputy honorary Consul.
According to him, by the police was marred by numerous procedural violations. “In addition, the detainees reported that the police had twice invited them to give a bribe that was refused”, – added Ozarenov.
According to him, the Russians were planning to get married after a trip to Thailand, but now they have to stay in the Kingdom. “The flight back home they have not had time. We found them an inexpensive apartment to stay in Pattaya until the situation is resolved”, – said the Deputy honorary Consul.
The detention of the Russians was confirmed by the head of the consular Department of the Russian Embassy in Thailand Vladimir Sosnov. “We can confirm that the Russians were indeed arrested and then released on bail” – he said.
According to Sosnova, law enforcement authorities in the Kingdom have not yet provided the diplomats no official information on this case. “We do not know whether a criminal case, what charges they face,” said the diplomat.
The Russian Embassy in Thailand earlier warned the Russians about the punishment for the use in the Kingdom and the importation there of electronic cigarettes. “In accordance with Thai law, the importation, use, storage and carrying in Thailand electronic cigarette and their analogues is forbidden”, – reads the statement of the Embassy, posted on the social network Facebook.
As explained in the Embassy, the violation of this requirement are punishable by a fine in the amount of one million baht (30.3 per thousand dollars) and imprisonment for up to 10 years.
Ignorance of local laws, the Russians may be great misfortune. In the beginning of the year on the beach of Koh Racha Yai in Thailand was arrested a 53-year-old tourist Olga Smirnova, which was accused of feeding the fish.
