Ukrainian company “Ukrgazvydobuvannya”, owned by national joint-stock company (NAK) “Naftogaz Ukraine”, the beginning of last month the shale gas extraction method of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to ease the country’s dependence on Russian gas supplies. About it as transfers TASS, said the Chairman of the Board NAK “Naftogaz of Ukraine” Andrey Kobelev in an interview with Bloomberg.
Work on drilling the first wells was conducted in cooperation with European partners, because the country does not have much experience in drilling in shale, he said.
KOBOLEV did not indicate where it was a drilled well. He also stated that Ukraine intends to halt years of decline in gas production and increase it from 20 to 27 billion cubic meters a year, to become “self-sufficient”.
According to the energy information Administration (EIA) of U.S. Department of energy, Ukraine has 128 trillion cubic meters of shale gas and has the fourth largest reserves of shale gas in Europe.
According to estimates from British energy company BP, in 2015, Ukraine produced 17.4 billion cubic meters of gas, that became the lowest indicator of the country more than 10 years. The problems with gas production associated with the departure from the country of the us oil company Chevron Corp. and Anglo-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell amid escalating conflict with Russia.
Ukrhazvydobuvannia is the largest producer of natural gas in Ukraine, providing over 70% of total production. 100% of the shares of the company owned by the company “Naftogaz of Ukraine”.
The method of fracking is that deep underground under high pressure pumped liquid with chemical reagents. It is needed to split the seam and release the gas. Opponents of the method argue that such actions threaten the contamination of drinking water, can cause earthquakes and noise.
