Lukashenka met with Medvedev and expressed concern for the fate of the CIS and the Eurasian economic Union
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko at the meeting with heads of government delegations of the Eurasian economic Union (EEU) and the Commonwealth of independent States (CIS) in Minsk expressed concern about the prospects of these unions. He also met with Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev, who led a delegation from the Russian Federation.
“Interfax”, the politicians discussed the most topical issues of bilateral relations and interaction in integration associations, said the Belarusian President.
Addressing the representatives of the CIS, Alexander Lukashenko said: “Increased criticism in our countries in connection with the dissatisfaction with the pace and the practical results of the integration development. Audible warning signals from business.”
“I’ll be very Frank: the critical mass of accumulated problems makes us, in Belarus, unsettling mood about the prospects not only of the CIS and the Eurasian economic Union,” – said the President of Belarus.
He explained that on the background of the economic downturn of the EAEU member state will inevitably involve protectionist measures. “But the Union and is meant as a more advanced integration form together to overcome the crisis and stagnation in the economy, to respect each other, to form common markets,” the Belarusian leader reminded.
The President of Belarus urged to implement the agreement in certain allied countries time. “While the situation is not rosy. In many areas there has been a significant lag. Often we have too long marking time in one place. A typical example is the elimination of exemptions, barriers and restrictions in trade, of which there are several hundred,” – said Lukashenko.
In particular, Belarus is not satisfied with the delay of the establishment of common markets of energy resources in the Eurasian economic Union. “We do not want long-term creation of common energy markets and liberalization carriers of one state carriage between points situated in the territory of another state,” – said Lukashenko.
He also called on CIS States to deeper integration, in particular, to become members of the EEU. “Deeper integration, economic integration within the Eurasian economic Union. Who is ready for it in the CIS? The contract is open, we invited all who are ready for it. Do not force anyone, but if you are willing – please,” he said.
In an example, the Belarusian leader cited the Union state of Belarus and Russia, calling it a “sample”. “At the time, was an example of how to integrate way to go, did not have much to invent: even then, with the Russians we’ve seen, creating the EAEU, we have relied on many of the agreements of Russia and Belarus”, – Lukashenka said.

“Maybe I should take a critical look at the legal framework of the CIS. For 25 years we signed an incredible amount of decisions, treaties and agreements. If they’re all relevant today and need?” – said Lukashenko. According to him, it is necessary to examine in order to see the truly “modern, authoritative and a vibrant organization, which will meet the interests of our countries.”
The President of Belarus also called for a revision of the provisions of the EEC Treaty. “Today work has begun on the improvement of the EAEC Treaty, the most important thing is to approach it formally, and to use this opportunity to solve the most complex integration issues. Lack of coordination has led to unbalanced internal integration processes”, – he said.
According to him, it is necessary to regulate the functioning of the Union in terms of one of the States of unilateral measures of protection of the market against third countries.
