The President of the Continental hockey League (KHL), Dmitry Chernyshenko, after a meeting of the Board at the end of the season stated that the optimum number of participants is 24 club. In season 2016/17 were 29 teams.

“We assume that the number of clubs that could be in the League – 24. This indicator was mathematically calculated in the analysis of large amounts of data. The revision number of clubs and optimization of the composition of the club by the comprehensive assessment will allow to solve the issue of spending cuts to compensate players. Will be stimulated by the market players, which are now at all clubs is not enough, will increase the level of the championship and the spectacle, will increase its commercial potential”, – quotes Chernyshenko “Interfax”.

Chernyshenko noted that some clubs are outsiders, despite the funding from public sources, not succeeding and slowing down the efficiency of the League, do not cover the cost for the matches. Games with low ratings and the attendance was 58% of all matches of the regular season-2016/17.

The President of the League added that the KHL continues to consider the inclusion of strong clubs from Asia or Europe, and it will also add to her entertainment.

“The League is the strongest product in the Eurasian space, in a season or two the League can Fund great teams from Japan, China and South Korea, where the 2018 Olympics will be held. If we talk about Europe, it can be teams from traditional hockey and nagakanya countries. If it’s serious with the marketing side of clubs, it will benefit the League,” he said.
