As for the winner of the Sakharov prize, in 2012 the Creator of the website Free Saudi Liberals Raif Badawi was arrested on charges of insulting Islam and sentenced to 600 lashes and seven years in prison. In 2014, the blogger issued a new sentence – the punishment of 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison. The first 50 lashes Badawi received in January 2015. In the shortlist prize, in addition to Badawi and Nemtsov, was also part of a group of political prisoners of Venezuela. Among the nominees was the Ukrainian woman-pilot Nadezhda Savchenko in a Moscow prison on charges of involvement in the murder of two VGTRK correspondents Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin.
The Sakharov prize has been awarded since 1988, her the cash equivalent of 50 thousand euros. The award is given for the protection of human rights, promoting democracy, upholding the rule of law. Last year this prize was awarded to doctor Denis Mukwege, who organized assistance to women victims of gang rape during the armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Jean Rey, in whose honor the award is named European liberal leaders, is a Belgian lawyer and liberal politician. He was the second President of the European Commission, chairing it from 1967 to 1970.
Boris Nemtsov was killed on 27 February in Moscow at the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky bridge near Kremlin. In the case of the murder of politician arrested five people: Zaur Dadayev, whom the consequence considers as the direct executor of a crime, Bakhaev, Khamzat, Timur Eskerkhanov, brothers Anzor and Said Gubareva. In September, Nemtsov was awarded posthumously to American liberty Award for 2015 “for a life devoted to the promotion of democracy in Russia.”
