Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill celebrated a prayer service on the IDP in the middle East and around the world Christians have a world-famous statue of Jesus the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. With him were there praying a few dozen Russians living in the city. Many tourists, no waiting, have seen such a rare event.

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church for the first time in the history of Brazil and visiting Corcovado mountain, on which is installed the 38-meter statue of Christ. “Christians are suffering not only in the middle East and Africa, but also in Europe – countries where the evil political force under the guise of tolerance is expelled Christianity from public life”, – said the Patriarch addressing the congregation.

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church urged to renew faith, returning to the traditions of the first centuries of Christianity’s existence and to always do God’s will. “We should be with God, to do his will, even if the doing of his will becomes unsafe. We must renew that faith, which Christians had since the first centuries of its historic existence,” said Patriarch Kirill.

Addressing the congregation, he noted that “we have no other hope except in God”, noting that “He never answers our prayers immediately.”

“God’s answer is not a trick in the circus,” said Patriarch Kirill. He emphasized that “the Lord does not interfere in our freedom, but acts through us in this world.”

The statue of Jesus towers over the city at the height of the mountain is 700 metres away. The sculpture from a pliable, but resistant to various climatic conditions steatite – 38 meters, weighs about a thousand tons. Established in 1931, the statue soon became the hallmark of Rio de Janeiro and throughout Brazil.

The vast majority of the Brazilian population are Christians (90.9 per cent): Catholics (64%), Protestants (22%) and followers of other faiths. In 1946 was created the Argentine and South American diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, uniting parishes in the Central States (except Mexico) and South America.

The divine Liturgy under the open sky Patriarch was concelebrated by bishops and priests of the Russian Orthodox Church, accompanying the head of the ROC during his first ever visit to Latin America, sang during the service the choir of the clergy of the Moscow diocese.

According to the Moscow Patriarchate, every year about 1 million people climb Corcovado to see the famous statue. In October 2006, the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the opening of the monument of the cardinal of Rio de Janeiro, Eusebio Oscar Schade announced the main symbol of the Brazilian sanctuary, after which the Brazilians conducted a reconstruction of the small temple at the base of the statue.

In October 2008 at the monument of Christ the Redeemer hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox and the Russian Orthodox churches for the first time in history made the Orthodox Liturgy. Then worship under the open sky was led by Metropolitan of Argentina and South American and Platon, Metropolitan of Eastern America and new York Hilarion.

As part of his beginning February 11 Hispanic pastoral visit of the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church has visited Paraguay, Cuba and Chile, and Antarctica. In Brazil, the Patriarch will be from 19 to 21 February.
