More than a third of Russians (36%) believe certain people are able to cast spells and the evil eye, of which 27% were faced personally with the manifestations of witchcraft. Women (42%) and, in General, people aged 45-59 years (42%) are inclined to consider real witchcraft more often than men and young people aged 18-24 years. Don’t believe in witchcraft, 41%, and 23% could not say anything definite on the subject.
Such a study about the attitude of Russians to witchcraft posted Monday on the website of the all-Russia centre of studying of public opinion (VTSIOM). The survey is timed to the Halloween holiday, which in the West is celebrated on October 31, the eve of all saints Day.
From the survey it also follows that the witches cause the citizens of the Russian Federation primarily negative associations. 18% reported that feel to it hostility and fear. Scams and scams people who are represented by mages and warlocks, called 15% of respondents. Indifferent to such people 10%. Interest and curiosity to them experiencing only 1%.
On the question of why people are turning to the sorcerers, 27% suggested that it occurs in an extremely difficult, desperate situation. 14% believe that witches are waiting for help in various matters. As many denounced referring to the mages in “ignorance and stupidity,” and 13% said that this is due to the “fear to do something yourself in life” and “weak character”. That appeal to the wizards because of illness, said 8%. Much less talk about the fact that the wizards are going to bring or to remove a spell, bewitch (6%), fate (2%).
As it turned out, various methods of resistance to evil magic used 29% of Russians who believe in witchcraft. Looking for protection in the first place in religion – 43% said they pray, attend Church, 14% reported that they wear a cross or amulet. Of the respondents, in their words, resort to folk remedies: 12% wear amulets, 9% – a special pin.
VTSIOM analyst Ivan Lekomtsev, commenting on the results of the survey, noted that the Russians are witchcraft negatively, but rather tend to justify those who turn to sorcerers and witch doctors. “Witchcraft is considered an option for the desperate or the weak, those who cannot solve their problems other ways,” he concluded.
The poll was conducted October 22-23, 2016. Survey method – telephone interviews in a stratified random sample of dibasic landline and mobile numbers 1,600 respondents. The maximum size of the error with 95% probability does not exceed 2.5%.
