The President of Russia Vladimir Putin on the phone and talked to the head of Cuba Raul Castro and expressed his condolences in connection with the death of his older brother, Fidel, reports the press service of the Russian leader.

“Vladimir Putin noted that Fidel Castro was a bright politician, a patriot, selflessly serving the Motherland, has won the love of the Cuban people and the respect of the international community. The President of Russia stressed the great contribution of Fidel Castro to the establishment of relations of friendship and strategic partnership between Russia and Cuba,” – said in the message.

The press service noted that Raul Castro, in turn, thanked Putin for the words of support and assured the “immutability of the course of the further development of comprehensive cooperation with Russia.”

Earlier, the Russian President sent Raul Castro a telegram of condolence. The document said that it was built by Fidel Castro “a free and independent Cuba became an influential member of the international community and served as an inspiring example for many countries and peoples.”

“Fidel Castro was sincere and reliable friend of Russia. He made an enormous personal contribution to formation and development of Russian-Cuban relations, the close strategic cooperation in all fields. This strong and wise man always was looking with confidence into the future. He embodied the high ideals of politics, citizen and patriot, sincerely convinced of the rightness of the cause that gave his life”, – Putin said.

Fidel Castro died last Friday. Cuba declared a nine-day mourning. The funeral of the leader of the Cuban revolution is scheduled for December 4.
