Alcohol will be banned on the streets, in public places and perhaps in the stadiums during the world Cup in 2022 in Qatar. This was stated in interview to the newspaper Al-Sharq, the General Secretary of the tournament organizing Committee Hassan al-Thawadi.

The ban on drinking alcohol is not complete, but it can be used only in “remote places”. For example, in hotels.

“Drinking alcohol is forbidden on the streets, squares, in public places, this is the final decision, – quotes al-Thawadi TASS. – We are also against the distribution of alcohol at stadiums and in their surroundings”.

The official noted that the international football Federation (FIFA) had a strong pressure on Russia, which will host the world Cup in 2018, the country changed the laws. Qatar is not going to lead with FIFA these discussions.

“Our position is clear, we will adhere to Qatari legislation, to take into account our traditions and customs,” said al-Thawadi.

According to local laws, the import of alcohol from abroad and its public use in public places is punishable by quite strict, including imprisonment.

As noted by AFP, the ban on drinking alcohol during the world Cup could lead to conflict between FIFA and the major sponsors of the tournament, which will be held from 21 November to 18 December 2022 in the seven cities of Qatar.
