Former Georgian President and ex-Governor of Odessa region of Ukraine, the party leader “movement novih forces,” Mikheil Saakashvili has filed a petition to grant him political asylum in Ukraine, reports “RBC-Ukraine” with reference to the lawyer of the politician Markiyan Halabala.
“He asked the status of the person in need of complementary protection. The application to the State migration service (SMS) in the Lviv region lodged on 11 September. Political asylum is a household name this status”, – explained the lawyer.
The lawyer told TASS that “GMR has not yet responded to the petition.” “By law a response must be received within days”, – explained the lawyer.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor General’s office and Ministry of justice of Ukraine argue that the issue of extradition of ex-President of Georgia in Tbilisi is not yet resolved. The decision to extradite Saakashvili will make the Ministry of justice, after appropriate verification, announced on Tuesday, October 3, Minister of justice Pavel Petrenko.
The Minister explained that extradition is a purely legal procedure. Because Ukraine, according to Petrenko, a democratic country, the final decision will be taken by the Ministry of justice after receipt of all materials preextraction check, which is vested in the Prosecutor General’s office. The Minister also stressed that no policy decision will be.
The Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that after the illegal return of Saakashvili to Ukraine, such verification is currently underway. According to the public Prosecutor, it is necessary, in particular, to check whether Saakashvili of Georgia accused of very serious crimes, which is in the Ukrainian code, and whether there are circumstances that prevent his extradition.
Lutsenko, commenting on the possibility of extradition of Saakashvili in Georgia, told about the presence of impediments. “Mr. Saakashvili after illegally crossing the Ukrainian border, filed documents to the Federal migration service of the interior Ministry, which, according to our international obligations, prevent his extradition.
