Russian Maria Sharapova lost to American Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the first season of the tournament series “Grand slam” – the Open championship of Australia on tennis.

The fifth match of the first racket of the tournament, lasted 1 hour 35 minutes, ended with the score 6:4, 6:1 in favor of the American.

Unbeaten Williams in matches with Sharapova lasts for 12 years and has reached 18 games. In 20 games of Sharapova only twice managed to defeat Williams. Both times it happened in 2004.

In the semifinals, Williams will meet with representative of Poland, Agnieszka Radwanska. After losing to Sharapova of Russia in singles at the Australian Open left.

In addition, it became known that Sharapova due to injury will not perform for the national team in a quarterfinal of the Federation Cup against the Netherlands, which will be held on 6 and 7 February in Moscow. Tennis player announced this in an interview after the game with Williams.

“I will go to Moscow to support the team in the match of the Cup of Federation against a team of Netherlands, but will not play. I had a left hand injury, and now have time to heal. Will have a week to not immediately went to the court and enough rest so that in the summer everything was fine with health before the Olympics”, – quotes Sharapova TASS.

We will add that from next Monday, Maria will fall in the WTA rankings from fifth to sixth place, behind the German Angélique Kerber. But if Australian Open win Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, Russia will occupy the seventh place in the ranking.
