Ten years since the murder of Anna Politkovskaya: the United States once again urged to find the customer of a crime
On the eve of the tenth anniversary of the murder of journalist of “Novaya Gazeta” Anna Politkovskaya, the investigation did not reveal who ordered the crime, to bring the matter before the end demanded the U.S. state Department. As stated by state Department spokesman John Kirby in a press release, the Russian authorities must judge not only the perpetrators but also the instigators of the murder. About the same Russian authorities reminded the journalists of “Novaya”, releasing a video demanding a thorough investigation.
“The courage and perseverance of Ms. Politkovskaya has shed light on the horrors of the conflicts in Chechnya and remain a source of inspiration for all of us”, – stated in the message of Department.
“We again urge the Russian government to bring to justice those responsible for ordering, planning and committing the murder of Ms. Politkovskaya. Like many other journalists over the past two decades covering events in the North Caucasus, Ms. Politkovskaya was murdered in retaliation for what he said about corruption, abuses and violations of human rights,” the statement says.
According to the representative of the US state Department, that this resonant crime and many others are still not revealed, undermines freedom of speech and respect for human rights in Russia.
The editorial office of”Novaya Gazeta” on the eve of the anniversary of the death of journalist Anna Politkovskaya placed on the website video with the treatment of journalists, accusing the consequence of inaction. Black-and-white video that lasts three minutes, 19 seconds, follow each other 53 employee publications.

Note that 1 September 2016, the official representative of the Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin, in his book “The loudest crimes of the XXI century in Russia,” wrote that the order for the murder of the journalist “the New newspaper” Anna Politkovskaya’s murder could have come from London – from Boris Berezovsky. However, the leadership of “the New newspaper” and family members Politkovskaya called this version untenable.
The murder of Politkovskaya
The journalist “the New newspaper” Anna Politkovskaya was murdered on 7 October 2006 in her apartment building in Moscow. Charged with the crime the defendants were five persons: Lom-Ali gaitukayev, his nephews Rustam, Ibragim and Dzhabrail Makhmudov, and Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. They were accused of committing crimes under articles 105 of the criminal code (“Murder”) and 222 of the criminal code (“Illegal arms trafficking”).
According to investigators, gaitukayev was founded in 2006 organized group, which included other defendants and police officer Dmitry Pavlyuchenko. Gaitukayev led the group until his arrest for organizing the attempted murder of Ukrainian businessman Gennady Korban. For this crime he was convicted and ended up in juvie. Further gaitukayev controlled the actions of the members of the group on the phone, being in places of imprisonment, established investigators.
According to the investigation, received from Pavlyuchenkova information about the place of residence of Politkovskaya, 7 October 2006 Makhmudov brothers began to follow the journalist. When Politkovskaya came to the house by car, Makhmudov informed about it his brother Gabriel, who conveyed the information to Rustam. Last entered the porch of the house where Politkovskaya lived and began to wait. When the journalist entered the Elevator, Makhmudov fired several shots at her. After that, the partners disappeared.
The Moscow city court on 14 December 2012 was sentenced for the murder of Politkovskaya to 11 years in prison the former head of the SDA GUVD of Moscow Dmitry Pavlyuchenkova. He was found guilty in the organization of surveillance of a journalist. Case Pavlyuchenkova was considered in a special manner, because he made a deal with the investigation.
On the basis of the verdict of the jury, the Moscow city court ruled on 9 June 2014, the convictions of the defendants in the resonant case. A native of Chechnya Lom-Ali gaitukayev who has been convicted of organizing the crime, was sentenced to life imprisonment. The same punishment was received by the native of Chechnya Rustam Makhmudov, who was found guilty in immediate execution of the murder.
The alleged intermediary in the crime organization, former police officer Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, received 20 years in prison, and the brothers of the killer, watching Politkovskaya, – Ibragim and Jabrail Mahmudovich – sentenced to 12 and 14 years respectively. In June 2015, the Supreme court has reduced by six months the sentence of Jabrail Makhmudov.
