Commissioner for digital economy and society of the European Union günther Oettinger at a meeting with businessmen in Hamburg last week used the term Schlitzaugen (“Gook”) to describe the people of China and other Asian countries, reports Reuters.

In a subsequent interview with the German newspaper Die Welt Oettinger said that in no way wanted to offend the Chinese, but to apologize for his statement refused because it was racist.

“You need to understand that my words were broader context. In his speech, I wanted to warn Germany from over-confidence”, – said the politician.

At the event in Hamburg Oettinger also managed to offend the gay community. Criticizing the current political agenda of Germany, the European Commissioner joked that the authorities probably will soon introduce in the country “forced gay marriage”.

In the German Federation of lesbians and gays criticized Oettinger and demanded his resignation. “The European Commissioner must adequately represent European values, and not pander to racist and homophobic views,” – said the press service of the organization.

Note that Oettinger is not the first time recently accused of racism. In August, the politician saidthat the accession of Turkey to the European Union will be possible only after Recep Tayyip Erdogan will step down as President. He noted that, “based on the present state of Affairs, the accession will not be possible until at least the next decade.”

In Ankara protested a similar policy statement. In particular, the Turkish Minister for European Affairs Omar Celik dubbed the words of the Commissioner “cultural racism.”
