The European Union has stood up for “Jehovah’s Witnesses” ready to sue Russia because of the ban of their activities
Prohibition of activities in Russia, the religious organization “Jehovah’s Witnesses” violates the principles laid down in the Constitution of the Russian Federation and Russia adopted international commitments and international standards. This is stated in the official statement of the European external action service (EEAS – the EU body that performs the functions of the Ministry of foreign Affairs), published on the website of the Ministry.
“Yesterday’s decision of the Supreme court banning the activities of the administrative center of Jehovah’s witnesses in Russia for “extremism” may make possible the prosecution of members of the organization for simple acts of worship,” – noted in the text.
Meanwhile, according to representatives of the EEAS, “Jehovah’s Witnesses” and other religious groups must be free to exercise the freedom of Assembly guaranteed by the Russian Constitution and Russia’s international obligations and international standards in the field of human rights”.
On the eve of the Supreme court has recognized organization “the administrative centre of Jehovah’s witnesses in Russia” extremist and has satisfied the claim of Ministry of justice of the Russian Federation to ban its activities on Russian territory. The Ministry of justice in its lawsuit pointed to revealed during the unplanned inspection of various irregularities in the implementation of the organization’s activities, including the law “On countering extremist activities”. In religious organizations also are concerned that the decision might relate to 175 thousand practicing believers.
October 12, 2016, the Tver court of Moscow has issued a warning to the administrative center of Jehovah’s witnesses in Russia for extremist activities. January 16, the Moscow city court found the warning to be legal.
The official representative of “Jehovah’s Witnesses” Sergey Cherepanov assured that the organization will appeal the decision of the Supreme court and already filed a complaint to the European court of human rights (ECHR).
“Jehovah’s witnesses” is an international religious organization that adheres to a heterodox directions in Christianity and is characterized by the specific interpretation of many religious concepts. In it consisted of 21 local organization, three of them were liquidated for extremism.
With the “Jehovah’s Witnesses” associated with numerous scandals due to the fact that their doctrinal literature forbids the transfusion of blood to sick members of the organization for the advice of a doctor. Doctors in such cases were often able to quickly seek court permission for the procedure, so that, in particular, in January the doctors Ivanovo region managed to save the lives of girls.
