In the Kharkiv Kyiv district court on Monday, October 17, sentenced the first accused to four of the 64 participants of the Maidan – riots with the seizure of the building of Kharkiv regional state administration and the proclamation of the “Kharkiv people’s Republic” in early April 2014. Two of them were sentenced to five years imprisonment, two to five years with a probation period of three years, reported on the website of the Prosecutor’s office Kharkiv region.
“Two men, who received five years, 1983 and 1987 years of birth, the other two received five years probation, the 1986 and 1983 year of birth. They were tried under part 1 of article 294 of the criminal code (organization of mass disturbances accompanied by violence against personality, pogroms, arson, destruction of property, seizure of buildings or structures, forcible eviction of citizens, resistance to authorities with weapons or other objects used as weapons, and also active participation in mass riots).
The sentence has not entered force and can be appealed in an appeal order.
Earlier, the Kyiv district court established the possibility of bail of suspects in the organization of the Maidan and participation in it. The Kharkiv regional Prosecutor’s office today filed an appeal against this decision, reads another message on the website of the Ministry.
As told the head of Department of Prosecutor’s office of area Alexander Shevchenko, last week the court at a preliminary meeting in connection with the change of judges considered the question of extending the measure of restraint for two suspects. The Prosecutor’s office insisted on the extension of detention without the right to bail, but the court, agreeing with the measure established the possibility of bail in the amount of 206 thousand hryvnias for each. While the appeal of the Prosecutor’s office not scheduled for consideration.
According to the head of Department of Prosecutor’s office of area Igor Chub, only in criminal trials for these events is charged with 64 people.
On 6 and 7 April 2014 in front of the Kharkiv regional administration held meetings and demonstrations, which escalated into mass riots and seizure of buildings. Over the building was installed a Russian flag instead of Ukrainian.
April 8, the Ukrainian interior Ministry special forces held the “anti-terrorist” operation and freed the administrative building, detaining 65 people. All of them judged under article “Mass riots”, prescribing punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of five to eight years.
