Russian President Vladimir Putin has completed participation in the special session of the 23rd World energy Congress in Istanbul and met with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit of the head of state had taken a number of important decisions, including the lifting of the ban on imports of Turkish fruits in Russia and signing intergovernmental agreement on the Turkish stream.
“Today, the Russian government took the decision to allow the Russian market a whole group of Turkish goods, the so-called stone fruit and citrus products. This decision is mutually beneficial, Russian agriculture does not produce such products. But the entry of Turkish products may lead, we hope, to lower prices in the domestic market”, – declared Putin (quoted by “Interfax”).
Following the meeting with his Turkish counterpart Russian President also noted that this decision will, in fact, the “market” for Turkish partners. “The sales volume of these products amounted to $ 500 million last year, so this is a significant decision,” – said Putin.
Erdogan, in turn, the results of bilateral meetings focused on the normalization of Russian-Turkish relations, which goes at a fast pace. “Participants discussed issues of trade-economic, defense industry, tourism, culture. From the point of view of Turkish-Russian relations today we had a very effective working day. I am entirely confident that the process of normalization of Turkish-Russian relations will continue in full swing,” – said Erdogan.
Recall, after the incident with the Russian su-24 bomber that was shot down in the skies over Syria, the Turkish air force, Moscow has imposed on Ankara’s economic sanctions. From 1 January this year, Russia banned the import of foodstuffs from Turkey. In particular, this country could not supply Russia with strawberries, oranges, tangerines, grapes, apples, pears, apricots, peaches and nectarines, plums and strawberries.
In the restrictive list were vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, cauliflower and broccoli, onion) and frozen cuts and offal of turkeys and chickens. Also prohibited was the Turkish cloves and salt. Later, Russian officials stated several times that they can impose restrictions on the import of Turkish vegetables and fruit, not placed under economic sanctions. Under the ban can be applied to any plant products that are not included in the sanctions list, if it does not meet safety standards, they said, for example, in the Rosselkhoznadzor.
On 17 March, the Rosselkhoznadzor imposed a ban on the import of pepper and pomegranate from Turkey. The Ministry also did not rule out the possibility of a ban of import of Chinese cabbage and lettuce. The Rosselkhoznadzor invited the Turkish side to Moscow to discuss the situation with the supply of plant products to Russia. As stated earlier, the Minister of agriculture of Russia Alexander Tkachev, Russia may replace the Turkish crop supplies from other countries. So, instead of Turkey vegetables and fruits can supply Azerbaijan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Morocco, and South Africa.
Turkey and Russia signed an agreement on “Turkish stream”
The talks between Putin and Erdogan in Istanbul took place behind closed doors, reports the press service of the Kremlin. From the Russian side the meeting was attended by Minister of foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and Russian energy Minister Alexander Novak.
The Kremlin announced that following talks in the presence of Putin and Erdogan, the energy Ministers of the two countries signed an intergovernmental agreement on the Turkish stream.
According to Putin, in the framework of the discussion on the draft Moscow and Ankara also agreed to provide Turkey discount on gas. Erdogan, in turn, said that “Turkish stream” will be accelerated, said RIA “Novosti”.
At the beginning of September “Gazprom” has received the first permit from Turkey in the implementation of the project “Turkish stream.” Thus, the gas pipeline project moves on to the practical implementation of the announced representatives of the Russian gas monopoly.
“The issuance of permits is positive news for Gazprom. This step of the Turkish side reflects the interest of the Turkish government in the project “Turkish stream” and indicates the transition to its practical implementation” – said Alexey Miller.
We will remind that on August 9, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after a personal meeting with Vladimir Putin said that his country is ready to implement with Russia the project of the gas pipeline “Turkish stream” and the construction of NPP “Akkuyu.” August 11, Erdogan announced about the readiness of Ankara to split with Moscow in half the cost of the construction of the onshore part of the pipeline “Turkish stream”.
“Turkish stream” involves construction of a pipeline from Russia to Turkey under the Black sea. The pipeline will pass 660 kilometers in the old corridor “South stream”, which was canceled in December of 2014, and 250 kilometers-within a new corridor towards the European part of Turkey. It is assumed that the supply of gas through the first pipeline will be entirely designed for the Turkish market.
Gazprom new gas pipeline under the Black sea, in his time, it took rather as an alternative “South stream” was designed for failure from the transit of gas through Ukraine. The project “Turkish stream” was prepared by the Russian side: Russia is completely ready infrastructure for gas supplies in the black sea highway, purchased the pipes for the offshore part, contracts for the construction of the motorways of the sea.
However, the construction of the pipeline repeatedly faced with difficulties. A clear understanding regarding the work performed there is still, however, Sberbank CIB at the end of last year calculated that even if “Gazprom” spent “Turkish stream” from 12 to 14 billion dollars.
