The largest international tobacco company Philip Morris in the foreseeable future may completely abandon the production and sale of cigarettes, replacing them with alternative products, including electronic cigarettes. This was announced by the head of the company Andre Calantzopoulos in an interview with the BBC on the occasion of the launch of the e-cigarette iQOS.
“I believe a moment will come when I can say, we have alternative products,” he said, adding that he hoped cooperation with the governments to start phasing out cigarettes. “I hope that this will happen in the near future”, – said the head of Philip Morris.
In an interview with British journalists Calantzopoulos also admitted that Philip Morris was aware of the harm caused to the health of people cigarettes. He stressed that the objective of the company is the search and introduction of less harmful product.
In the UK, Philip Morris launched the sale of new, less harmful electronic cigarette, which can cease the production and supply of traditional tobacco products. The company argued that smokers will get the same nicotine dose, but 90% less toxins entering the body together with the cigarette smoke.
Smoking system technology iQOS involve heating tobacco, but not burning it. The system is a charger unit size of a mobile phone and a holder into which is inserted a tobacco stick, and where it subsequently heats up. The process of Smoking iQOS is not accompanied by smoke.
According to the media, to create a substitute for conventional cigarettes Philip Morris has spent about $ 2 billion. Currently, the company expressed the intention to cooperate with governments in the policy of refusal of conventional cigarettes.
