The head of the Pentagon told about the discussion the possibility of returning to South Korea US nuclear weapon
Pentagon chief James Mattis said that he had discussed recently with the Minister of defense of South Korea by Sohn young-Mu the possibility of placing in this country of U.S. nuclear weapons, but did not go into the details of what the outcome of this discussion, reports AP.
“No, we discussed this option, but that’s all I wanted to say,” said Mattis 18 September, during an impromptu press conference in the Pentagon, responding to a question, is it likely that a portion of such weapons can be delivered to the Korean Peninsula.
The head of the military Department of the USA has confirmed that the US administration has military options to counter threats from North Korea, including those which do not threaten Seoul. What meant the cyber attacks, direct fighting or something else- he refused to clarify.
At the same time, Mattis added that diplomatic pressure on North Korea is bearing fruit. To confirm his words he cited the decision of the Mexican authorities about the expulsion from the country of Ambassador Kim Hyun-Ki.
Note that, in addition to Mexico, similar measures were adopted in several countries, including Spain, Kuwait and Peru. A few States that have diplomatic relations with North Korea expelled the North Korean ambassadors, but declared the reduction of contacts with the country in response to the ongoing nuclear tests conducted by Pyongyang. Among these countries were Egypt, Uganda and the Philippines, reports Reuters.
American tactical nuclear weapons were removed from South Korea in 1991, after the end of the cold war. Then Seoul and Pyongyang adopted a Joint Declaration on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
The question about the possibility of re-accommodation in South Korea, this weapon has been raised. So, in April of this year it was reported that the US authorities considered such measures as a way of deterring aggression from North Korea.
Last fall with a proposal to consider the possibility of placing such weapons in the Republic of Kazakhstan was made by the national Advisory Council on democratic and peaceful reunification of Korea gave the Russian service KBS. The foreign Ministry then stated that the government remains true to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
In September this year, South Korean authorities saidthat they do not consider the possibility of placing in the country of tactical nuclear weapons of the United States. This was reported by a local radio station KBS , citing an unnamed representative of the presidential administration of the Republic of Korea.
According to him, the government continues to adhere to the principle of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The statement was made in response to a request of journalists to comment on the information channel NBC, which with reference to the official representative of the White house reported that the administration of U.S. President Donald trump does not exclude the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea if Seoul requested.
