Import of chocolate and chocolate confectionery in Russia in the first six months of 2015 decreased by 2.4 times to 20,98 thousand tons with 50,17 thousand tons in the first half of last year.
In value terms, imports fell in January-June to 106 million $ 241 million in the first half of 2014, reports the Agency city news “Moscow” with reference to the calculations of the Centre for research confectionery market (CICR).
Largest suppliers of chocolate and chocolate confectionery products in Russia are the countries of the European Union. Of them in the first places are Germany, Italy and Poland.
“Almost all supplying countries sharply reduced the volume of supplies of chocolate and chocolate confectionery products in Russia. Prominent in the imports of chocolate and had to Kazakhstan and Belarus, which also reduced the volume of shipments of confectionery products in Russia and replaced the fallen of imports coming due to Ukraine,” write the experts of ZIKR.
In ZIKR also concluded that “the sharp reduction of the chocolate market continues from the beginning of this year and is a result of the fall of the ruble, the General economic problems in the country and the loss of purchasing power of the population in particular.”
In addition, since April there has been a sharp growth in world prices of cocoa raw materials associated with the expectations of a poor harvest in major producing countries cocoa. In June, world cocoa prices reached four-year highs. Also the decline in imports is due to the ban on the import of chocolate products from Ukraine, introduced in September 2014.
In the second half of 2015, as predicted, ZIKR, may be referred to a reverse trend – the growth in imports associated with the traditional increase in purchases of imported chocolate products in anticipation of new year holidays.
But the seasonal demand of the Russian manufacturers “can be problematic because of the difficult financial condition of the latter.”
Previously it was reported that the production of chocolate and other food products containing cocoa (except sweetened cocoa powder) Packed in the first half of 2015 decreased by 18.4% compared with the same period of 2014 and amounted to 44.4 thousand tons.
