The interior Ministry confirmed that the case against Browder for the purchase of shares of Gazprom closed
In the Russian interior Ministry confirmed that a criminal case about the unlawful purchase of shares of “Gazprom” against the founder of Hermitage Capital of William Browder closed, reports “Interfax” with reference to the press service of the Ministry reported on 8 September.
Action Browder was characterized as illegal business under article 171 of the criminal code, because he acquired the shares of “Gazprom” using controlled legal person, without special permission of the Federal Commission on securities, the Ministry of internal Affairs. But as a result of changes in the criminal code carry out business activities without special permission was decriminalized. So in July 2017 criminal prosecution of Browder on the fact of illegal transactions with the shares has ceased, said the Agency.
On termination of the case filed against the British in the shares of “Gazprom” reported on 4 September “Interfax” citing a source familiar with the situation.
Browder has accused Russia in the fraudulent theft of more than 130 million shares in the period 1999-2004 worth more than two billion rubles.
However, now in the Tver court of Moscow considers a criminal case against
the founder of Hermitage Capital and his business partner Ivan Cherkasov, accused of three counts of tax evasion in the budget of the Russian Federation for the sum more than 3,5 billion rubles, and damage to the country’s budget in the amount of one billion rubles by deliberate bankruptcy of the company affiliated to him.
The victims in the case are three branches of management FNS across Moscow, which in the framework of the criminal case stated to the defendants a civil action for the amount of damages. The process takes place in absentia.
13 July 2013, the Tver court of Moscow sentenced in absentia for William Browder to nine years in prison on charges of tax evasion amounting to more than 522 million rubles through falsifying tax returns and illegal use of benefits intended for the disabled.
Browder and the head of the British company Firestone Duncan Jamison Firestone said that the employee of Fund Hermitage Capital of Sergey Magnitsky on 16 November 2009 the deceased in the Moscow detention facility, was arrested after he revealed a corruption scheme involving some officials and employees of the interior Ministry.
