The Minister of education and science of the Russian Federation Olga Vasilyeva said that he sees both negative and positive aspects of the policy of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

In an interview to”Interfax” she called Stalin “the man, the tyranny which is self-evident,” and on the conscience which victims of political repression. “But we have to agree that this man – a statesman, – said Vasilyev. – I usually call a great politician with a great big sign “minus”. It’s my attitude, therefore, hardly possible to me as a Stalinist”.

She recalled that her candidate and doctoral dissertations on the history devoted to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in the years of the great Patriotic war, including the relations between Stalin and the Church. “In 1943-1953 years of this tyrant and pragmatic use of the potential of the Russian Orthodox Church for organization of the postwar world order. The uniqueness of this decade is that the interests of the ruler and the Church coincided”, – said the Minister.

Also, in her words, Stalin in the 1930-ies restored the continuity of the country with its pre-revolutionary history, interrupted by the arrival to power of the Bolsheviks, and revived in the public consciousness the concept of “state patriotism”, which put a cross in 1917. “Stalin as a pragmatist, understood that ahead of the terrible war and we need to mobilize, including the spiritual. Hence the picture in the movie, hence the poem and the film about Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the terrible,” – said Vasilyev.

Without mythologizing in the history not do

Meanwhile Vasileva expressed confidence that “without mythologizing” of history and its teaching is not enough. “You see, no heroes, no heroic image of historical characters is impossible to do. Whether you’re a small person, whether you’re an adult, you must have an ideal to which to strive”, – she explained his position.

On the question of its relation to the legend about the feat of 28 Panfilov heroes in the defense of Moscow in 1941, Vasiliev answered that she takes the position of “teacher” – the head of the Center of military history of Russia Georgy Kumaneva. This historian takes the view that the feat of the Panfilov is no doubt a testimony of the author of the famous editorial in the “red star” Alexander Krivitsky that the story of the heroic defense of the guardsmen they supposedly invented was “broken” with prosecutors under the threat of exile to the camps, says the Agency.

Recall, after the appointment Vasilyeva as head of the Ministry of education in August this year, appeared in the media publications about her lectures are different times in which it was noted a special role of Stalin. In this regard, the Federation of Jewish communities of Russia (FJC) from Vasilyeva demanded to explain about her relationship to the era of Stalin and state terror of the time.

Note that the “Stalinization” in recent years has become a kind of trend in Russia. Controversial Soviet leader set monuments in different cities. Some politicians and officials partly support policy pursued by Stalin.

Olga Vasilyeva is the author of about a hundred articles and publications about the Church, including “Ecclesiastical Stalinism: legends and facts”, “the Church and the authorities in the XX century”, “Church-State relations of the Khrushchev period.” Prior to his current post, she held the position of Deputy Director for social projects in the Russian presidential administration, and before that he worked in the Institute of Russian history, was the head of the center for the history of religion and Church and taught at the Sretensky theological Seminary under the authority of the Confessor of Vladimir Putin Tikhon (Shevkunova).
