The new season filmed BBC series “Sherlock” may be the last, let slip the lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch in an interview with GQ.

“This could be the end of an era. It already feels like the end of an era, to be honest,” he admitted, talking about the next series of “Sherlock”.

According to him, the plot of the series went to the place for which it is difficult to imagine a continuation. However, Cumberbatch did not categorically say that the fans have to say goodbye to their favorite characters. “I’ll never say “never” to this project. I would like to return to it, would again sink into it. But for the immediate future – Yes, we’ve done something finished. I think you just have to wait and see,” he added.

As recalled to Digital Spy, in July co-author of “Sherlock” Steven Moffat admitted that the new season may be the last for the project. However, a month later, he hinted that some of the plot was saved as reserve for the fifth season.

Earlier, the producers of the series, the BBC brought enormous financial gain, claimed that will remove the “Sherlock” as long as Benedict Cumberbatch does not become “too popular”.

The first series of the show with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the lead roles was released on BBC in 2010. The authors of the series are mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, known for his work on the television series “Doctor Who” and “Jekyll”. The shooting of “Sherlock” took place mainly in London and Cardiff.

In 2011, the project received a BAFTA television award in the category “Best drama series”. The second season was shown in January 2012, and the third in January 2014 with the screening of a mini-series on BBC One on 25 December 2013.

In January 2014, Steven Moffat confirmed that the series is renewed for fourth and fifth seasons, and expressed the hope that producing new episodes will be less than two years, as it was in previous seasons. January 1, 2016, was shown Christmas edition of the series “Sherlock” titled “the Ugly bride”, the plot is not associated with any released three seasons, nor with the fourth season.
