The head of Palestinian autonomy Mahmud Abbas has threatened to break off cooperation with Israel in the security sphere, if Jerusalem is going to expand its settlements in the Palestinian territories in the West Bank. About this politician said on Wednesday, February 8, speaking before the French Senate in Paris, reports i24news.
In his speech, Abbas said that, “if the colonization will continue,” he did not remain other choice. “This will not be my fault,” he said.
The Palestinian authority has threatened to cease cooperation, which is important for Israel, since the Palestinian intelligence allow you to follow the Islamist movement Hamas and its members in the West Bank. “If we give up the coordination of operations to ensure security, there will be chaos,” warned Abbas in March in an interview with Israeli Channel 2.
In late January, Abbas saidthat he accepted the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to participate in a trilateral meeting in Moscow with the participation of Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu.
On 6 February, the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament) passed a bill to legalize settlements in the West Bank on land belonging to Palestinians. The act also establishes the abolition of the demolition of illegal buildings settlers and renewal of squatter long-term lease with the payment of compensation to the Palestinian owners of the land.
Earlier in January, Israel has approved a large-scale construction in the West Bank in Judea and Samaria, by refusing to implement the resolutions of the UN Security Council to immediately stop settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories. February 7, Abbas met with French President Francois Hollande, who expressed hope that the Israeli government will reconsider this law, which opens the way for the annexation of the Palestinian territories and contrary to the peaceful settlement of the middle East conflict.
