Former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych of the Soviet district court of Rostov-on-don via video link on Monday, November 28, at the second attempt, responds to questions from the Sviatoshynsky district court of Kyiv on the case about the events on independence square in 2014. The first meeting, which was held on Friday, 25 November, was postponed because of the inability to deliver to the building of the former fighters of the Ukrainian special forces “Berkut”, who are accused of murder of Maidan activists. Yanukovych involved in the process as a witness, arrived at the courthouse in Rostov-on-don at the beginning of 14 hours Moscow time. As reports “Interfax – Ukraine”, the court was taken in for questioning Yanukovych and the former commander of the Interior troops of Ukraine Stanislav Shulyak three and a half hour: “One hour on direct examination by the defense, one hour cross-examination by the prosecution, after the technical break (30 minutes) – 30 minutes for questions from the victims and other members, then 30 minutes for each side to specific questions that may arise in the course of the interrogation.”
Present at the meeting, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yury Lutsenko declared Yanukovych the suspicion of treason and violation of territorial integrity.
Lutsenko said that the former President “is suspected of committing treason, aiding the authorities of the Russian Federation in deliberate acts committed with the aim of changing the boundaries of the territory and the state border of Ukraine in violation of the order established by the Constitution, and waging an aggressive war-the crimes provided by part 1 article 111, part 5 article 27, part 3 of article 110, part 5 article 27, part 2 of article 437 of the Criminal code of Ukraine” (quote from the text transcript of the website of the TV channel).
The attorney General noted that since the former President is abroad, the content of the suspicion shall be announced orally, and the military Prosecutor gave the lawyer Yanukovych a notification: “Given the fact that Yanukovych is beyond, not coming to the calls and actually hiding from law-enforcement bodies of Ukraine, the content of the suspicion is declared orally, namely the notice today about an hour ago sent to all known residential address and the last visit of Victor Yanukovych, and after the end of my statement will be presented to the lawyer the last,” – said Lutsenko.
According to him, the message on suspicion includes more than 20 pages. According to the text, Yanukovych has committed treason in Russia March 1, 2014 “with the aim of promoting Russia and its representatives in violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, hoping to obtain support and protection from the representatives of the Russian Federation, hoping for a residence permit on the territory of the Russian Federation and the avoidance of responsibility in Ukraine.” Yanukovych is suspected that he “has provided Russia assistance in subversive activities against Ukraine and contributed to the representatives of the Armed forces in waging aggressive war against Ukraine and the change of borders”.
According to Lutsenko, Yanukovych “explicitly aware of the wrongfulness of his actions, drew up, signed and filed a written statement to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin with the request to use the Armed forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, which gave a foreign state assistance in conducting subversive activities against Ukraine.”
“Now, not as attorney General, I accuse Yanukovych as Ukrainian that he opened the door of a war of aggression against our country, that he destroyed the sovereignty of the state”, – concluded the Prosecutor.
Yanukovych said on the possible involvement in the dispersal of the Maidan, the former head of his administration
The ex-President took the oath, pledging to tell the court the truth and nothing but the truth. He added that it will use its “notes” during the interrogation.
During interrogation he stated that the former head of the presidential administration of Ukraine Sergey Levochkin could be involved in the violent dispersal of the Maidan on the night of 30 November 2013. “I say all the time about Levochkin. I replied, Yes, maybe he had something to do with it. But there is no evidence that I personally was not a consequence of their not established,” – said Yanukovych.
“So if that were the case, let the government prove it, if not prove, let it be on his conscience. Or if he’s innocent, let those who say that should apologize, it should establish the court”, – added ex-the President of Ukraine.
He said that he did not give orders to use weapons against activists of the Maidan. “I was against the use of weapons and against bloodshed. I didn’t have such orders to give,” said Yanukovych (as quoted by Agency “Ukrainian national news”).
The judge was asked to comment on the presence of weapons on the Maidan, Yanukovych said that the area had weapons of two types – personal weapon of the people, including hunting, and foreign weapons, mainly sniper rifles or assault rifles. “Buy them in the Ukraine was not very difficult because the bodies of the air force was allowed hunters to buy it legally. Before the court rallied the relatives of the victims on the Maidan
The building of the Svyatoshinsky regional court of Kiev before the trial began the meeting with participation of relatives of those who suffered during the riots in 2014. As reported by RIA “Novosti”, about three dozen people showed signs demanding to bring Yanukovych to justice. When the protesters claimed to block the court they do not intend to.
As reported in court, present at the meeting were more than 40 accredited media in the hallway outside the courtroom, reporters were not enough space, reports the Ukrainian edition “Correspondent”.
