The Interpol General Assembly chose new leadership of the organization: President of the international criminal police became Deputy Minister of public security of China Meng Hongwei, reported in the official Twitter of the organization. Vice President of Interpol was the representative of Russia the General-the major of police Alexander Prokopchuk said in the other message.

The election was held in the framework of the 85th session of the General Assembly of Interpol. A source in the Russian delegation told RIA “news”that the candidate Prokopchuk, who heads the National Central Bureau of Interpol in Russia, voted by 127 delegates, with 10 against and eight abstentions.

“The citizen of the Russian Federation not only took the post of Vice-President from Europe for the first time since the country’s accession to Interpol more than a quarter century ago, but was elected with 127 votes for and only 10 against, and eight abstentions” – said the Agency interlocutor.

85th General Assembly of Interpol held from 7 to 10 November on the Indonesian island of Bali. At the session the sides also discussed issues of combating terrorism, organized crime and cyber security.

Interpol – the second after the United Nations according to the number of members of the international organization and the largest organization of law enforcement, which has 190 member States. The previous President of Interpol was the representative of France Mireille Ballestrazzi, which led the organization since November 2012. Russia became a member of Interpol as the legal successor of the USSR, which joined the organization in 1990.
