The Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for external Church relations with society and mass-media Vladimir Legoyda, spoke Tuesday at the British Royal Institute of international Affairs (Chatham House) in London, said that the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) acts against the efforts to transform Christianity into a political ideology. He also stressed that the upcoming meeting of Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia Kirill organized without the participation of the Russian authorities.

“Our Synodal Department sees its goal in cooperation with the state, society and the media in the transformation of society on the basis of values such as love, mercy and justice. At the same time we categorically reject any attempt to turn Christianity into some kind of political ideology” – leads TASS words of Legoida.

A Church representative said that “the ROC is not a Church of the Russian Federation and Patriarch with equal pastoral attention looks at the faithful of all States of his canonical responsibility”.

According to Legoyda, “formed a century ago the identity of the peoples of historic Rus’, the Church remains a vital part of society in our days”.

Vladimir Legoyda also stated that “the government of Russia did not participate in the negotiations on the organization of the upcoming historic meeting of Patriarch and Pope in Cuba”.

Earlier today the President’s press Secretary Dmitry Peskov asked by journalists to clarify the details of the minutes of the meeting of primates of churches are advised to contact the Russian Orthodox Church.

“Of course,” he replied to the question whether the preparation for the meeting, regardless of the Kremlin. “This is the theme of the Russian Orthodox Church inter-Church dialogue,” – said Peskov.
