The state Department accused Syria in creating a crematorium for burning the bodies of political prisoners
The United States on Monday accused Syria of executions of thousands of political prisoners, whose bodies subsequently were burned in the crematorium to hide the scale of mass murder. As transfers Associated Press, such statement was made by acting assistant head of the U.S. Department of state for Near Eastern Affairs Stuart Jones.
According to us authorities, in prison Saydnaya, located 30 kilometers North of Damascus, daily hung about 50 prisoners. Jones stressed that this “new level of immorality” even for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The state Department accompanied its charges with photographs taken from satellites. They show the building of the prison complex, which has been modified in order to establish a crematorium. The Agency, however, said that the photos, the first of which is dated 2013, not prove that it is indeed a crematorium, but the building in its design is clearly reminiscent of that.
Recall that in early April the international human rights organization Amnesty International published a reportstating that Syrian authorities use torture and commit mass murder of prisoners in the military prison Saydnaya. For the period from September 2011 to December 2015 there were supposedly executed between 5 thousand to 13 thousand people.
All executions were carried out almost without trial in strict secrecy. The prisoners were brought before “military-field Tribunal”, which was the sentencing for one to three minutes. Then the prisoners were taken away to the place of execution, where he hung. Human rights activists reported that the bodies of those killed then trucks were brought to military camps and buried in mass graves.
Amnesty International stressed that their report based on the testimony of 84 witnesses from among former prison inmates, guards, judges. Human rights activists said that data about what is happening in prison after December 2015, they do not, however, “there is no reason to believe that the execution has stopped.”
Note that trump this week starts their tour to the middle East. He has already met with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, and will soon visit Saudi Arabia and Israel. The governments of these countries throughout the Syrian conflict, he urged the American government to actively intervene in Syria.
The American leader has already demonstrated its willingness to increase pressure on Assad, authorizing a missile strike on a military airfield shirt in the province of HOMS. Trump then stated that it is a response to a chemical attack in Khan Sheyhun in Idlib province, which Washington attributes to the Syrian authorities. Last week, the US President extended for a year sanctions against the Syrian government “in response to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security interests, foreign policy and the U.S. economy.”
