The Supreme court on Thursday, September 29, declared lawful the decision on the recognition of the Mejlis an extremist organization and ban its activity in Russia, reports RIA “Novosti”. Thus, the Supreme court rejected the appeal of the members of the Majlis.

The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars was banned on April 26 the Supreme court of the Crimea as an extremist organization on the claim of the Prosecutor of the Republic Natalia Poklonskaya, who accused the leaders of the Mejlis of extremist activities, including the organization of the energy blockade of the Peninsula and riots.

On 18 April, the justice Ministry officially turned the Majlis into the list of extremist organizations.

In may the appeal in the Supreme court was filed by the lawyer Cemil Temishev, who represented the organization in court, and member of the Majlis Lemmar Yunusov. Now the decision is deemed to have come into force.

The necessity of addressing the Majlis, the Prosecutor explained that the organization, “which allegedly protects the interests of the Crimean Tatars”, actually is a hazard and endangers the life and health of people and the activities of state bodies. He listed the incident in 2014-2016 cases of “destructive activity and destabilization of the situation on the Peninsula” unauthorized rallies, destruction of property, loss of life and injuries, the use of violence against police and border guards, food and energy blockade of the Crimea.

According to the Prosecutor, the Majlis has put pressure on the Crimean Tatars to reduce their turnout at the elections and fought for the violation of the territorial integrity of Russia. The Prosecutor recalled that the head of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov arrested in absentia, he is accused in several cases on charges of public appeals to violation of territorial integrity of Russia.

In turn, representatives of the Mejlis assured the judge that all these actions are correctly qualified and are not extremism. “Declaration of the rights of indigenous peoples adopted by the UN Assembly, provides for their right to political organization and creation of representative bodies,” – said at the meeting, the lawyer Kirill Koroteev. He explained that in the Majlis, “there are different points of view on various issues – there are those who support Chubarova, there are those who condemn him.”

Also before the court was made by the representative of Committee on Affairs of the deported citizens of the Republic of Crimea Alexander Zadkov, who said that the authorities of the Peninsula are doing to the Crimean Tatars. According to him, representatives of the people organized a special program of Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Fitr announced weekend celebrations, the construction of the mosque, which will be the largest in Europe. “In times of Ukraine has not been done, ever,” he said.

Previously to cancel the decision to ban the activities of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars of Russia called the deputies of the European Parliament and the US state Department.
