However, in the second half of the 40 years, with the growing campaign of anti-Semitism, the Jews began to talk about abstract “Soviet citizens”. This policy was continued in subsequent decades, found reflection in the memorial, built in 70-ies on the place of mass executions.

A quarter of a century after the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence the issue of the participation of Ukrainians in the massacres of Jews continued to complicate bilateral relations between Israel and Ukraine, on whose territory the Nazis and their accomplices murdered six million Jews.

In 2014 the current leader of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at the ceremony of remembrance of the victims of the executions at Babi Yar promised “never allow recovery of fascism” in Ukraine. Speaking about the lessons of this tragedy, the Ukrainian leader said that today is a reminder to the world about how dangerous war and ethnic strife and how to appreciate the world. “Ukraine has received a powerful inoculation against fascism”, – said Poroshenko.
