The matches of the ice hockey world championship in 2021 will be held in the capitals of Belarus and Latvia, Minsk and Riga. This decision was taken on Friday at a Congress of the International ice hockey Federation (IIHF) in Cologne in the framework of the world Cup 2017.

During the elections, the joint application of Belarus and Latvia scored 55 votes, while the only competitor – Finland cities Tampere and Helsinki – 52, reports the press service of the IIHF.

The proposed dates for the competitions are held 7-23 may 2021. The main platform of the world Cup will be 15-thousand “arena-Minsk”, which will host the semi-finals, match for third place and the final. Team Russia in the group stage of the championship will play in Minsk.

Riga and Minsk in the past once hosted the world championship – in 2006 and 2014 respectively. With the 2014 world championship in Belarus became the second attendance in history. The matches of the tournament from the stands saw a 640 044 fans.

The world hockey championship in 2018 will be held in the Danish cities of Copenhagen and Herning, a year later – in the Slovak cities of Bratislava and košice, and after another year in the Swiss Zurich and Lausanne.

Russia previously hosted the world Championships in 2000, 2007 and 2016. According to the head of Federation of hockey of Russia Vladislav Tretyak, a new application of his Ministry is to serve the purpose. Unwritten interval between events in a single country is seven or eight years.
