Speaker of the state Duma Vyacheslav Volodin Thursday, November 24, was elected Chairman of the parliamentary Assembly of the Organization of collective security Treaty (CSTO), reports RIA “Novosti”. The decision to approve it at this position was adopted unanimously at the ninth plenary session of the CSTO parliamentary Assembly in the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg.

Volodin candidacy for the presidency of the Assembly was proposed by the Chairman of the Majilis (lower chamber) of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nigmatulin. “We all know Vyacheslav Viktorovich as an energetic person”, – quotes Nigmatulin RBC. “He established himself as a talented person. This has repeatedly demonstrated that can bring together colleagues with different views”, he added and expressed confidence that Volodin “can give new impetus to the development of the parliamentary Assembly in the framework of our organization.”

Nigmatulin was supported by the representatives of all the parliaments of the member States of the CSTO. The Chairman of the Armenian National Assembly Edward Sharmazanov said: “We do not need great upheavals. We need a strong organization.”

Volodin, who replaced on this post eks-the speaker of the state Duma Sergei Naryshkin, who in September went to work in the foreign intelligence Service, thanked the participants of the meeting, calling his appointment “a great honor”. “This, of course, very important for me. Will try to justify the credit of trust,” he said.

He said that the development of allied relations between CSTO countries is of particular importance against the background of ongoing attempts to achieve a military advantage by increasing military groups in the vicinity of areas of responsibility of the CSTO.

“Today, the parliamentary Assembly and faces new challenges. Security in the modern world requires making decisions. We must do everything possible to ensure the safety of all our countries was organized efficiently” – quoted Volodin “Rosbalt”.

Among the priority tasks Volodin called, in particular, the acceleration of the formation of a single legal space in the sphere of defense and security in the territory of the CSTO.

“To date, in the framework of CSTO signed and ratified 48 international treaties. It is important to continue to consistently continue the process. So, in the State Duma already this year, we plan to ratify submitted by the President… the Agreement on cooperation of member States of CSTO in the field of transportation of military and other units, their movable property, as well as military products,” – said Volodin.

Among other important lines of work he called parliamentary crisis response not only in the CSTO, but also beyond.

Later, Volodin told reporters that all the parliamentarians with whom he met in a bilateral format, invited him to visit their States: it is the representatives of Pakistan, Afghanistan, are invited to participate in the Assembly, Tajikistan, Armenia and Belarus.

In the Parliamentary Assembly of the CSTO includes representatives of six countries: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan. The President of the Assembly of the CSTO is elected for a term of three years.
